While dismantling old houses in the Sumy region of Ukraine, we came across an old oak tree. Without giving it much thought, we bought everything that came with it. No sorting, no particular plan. Along with the oak, we were loaded up with timber, old nails, pieces of metal, and decades’ worth of accumulated dust. At the time, we thought this wood would become beautiful, artistic pieces. But none of us had any idea how much backbreaking work stood between an old beam and a finished product. Why did we take on this oak in the first place? Because none of us wanted to destroy something that still had a life left in it. If a tree has stood for more than a hundred years and retained its strength, why burn it or throw it away? To us, giving it a second life is far more valuable. Reality brought us back down to earth very quickly. The oak was literally filled with nails, pieces of metal, dust, and countless other traces of its long life. Every centimetre of the wood demanded patience. There were dozens of moments when we wanted to give it all up. To be honest, we still don’t know what made us carry on back then. Sometimes, we don’t know what keeps us going even now. The hardest part wasn’t even working with the wood. It was finding someone just as crazy as we were, someone willing to take this on with us. Today, he is a part of our team. His name is Vasyl “Buhor”. Over time, our attitude towards the material changed as well. Today, we select our timber far more carefully because we know that not every piece of wood needs to become a finished product. But when the material is truly worth saving, we are willing to go through the entire difficult process. When an old oak is transformed into a finished piece, there is a feeling that it has truly been given a second life. It no longer burns for a few hours in a stove. Instead, it continues to live in a home where people touch it every day, work at it, have dinner around it, celebrate together, and create new memories. The best part for us is the people. Many of our customers become friends. They understand how much work is hidden behind every piece we make, and they see it not simply as wood, but as a story. Perhaps our greatest value does not lie in the fact that we make furniture or wooden pieces. Our greatest value lies in the fact that we didn’t give up after pulling out the first hundred nails. And we won’t give up after the next hundred either. Because where others see old timber, we see a story that hasn’t ended yet.
